Alfie Phillips: Apprentice to Junior Service Engineer

Alfie Phillips completed his NVQ Level 3 in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning on 29 October 2024, stepping into his new role as a Junior Service Engineer.

Throughout his three-year apprenticeship, Alfie learned directly from experienced engineers and was mentored by Dean Walker, who helped shape his strong work ethic and confidence.

Alfie’s now excited to take on more responsibility and continue his growth in the field.

Tell us about your apprenticeship

My apprenticeship was a three-year journey primarily spent onsite learning from engineers, with periodic trips to college for block releases. A major reason I chose this path was the opportunity to work for a company like Daikin and learn from some of the best engineers in the country.

Who were your key mentors?

My main mentor during my apprenticeship has been Dean Walker, who has been really supportive and always there to help me. The biggest lesson I’ve learned from him is the importance of a strong work ethic and always doing the best job possible.

How do you feel you’ve grown, both professionally and personally?

I’ve definitely gained a lot of confidence, both personally and professionally.

How has the team culture shaped your experience?

The team culture has been great. From my managers to the engineers, everyone has prioritized my development and supported my growth throughout my apprenticeship.

What are you looking forward to now that you're fully qualified?

I’m looking forward to taking on more responsibilities and having the opportunity to handle more jobs on my own.

What advice would you give to an apprentice just starting out?

I’d advise new apprentices to stick with it; the knowledge will come with time. Don’t waste the opportunity - enjoy learning while you can!
